When I first started my Computer Science degree @ MUN I hated the fact that I was forced to use Linux. After a while it grew on me, I like programming in Linux, it was less cumbersome than Windows (and less bugy). I installed in on my machine, however I ONLY used it for programming. Then the other day my IBM DeskStar 30GB HD died (no ****.... those f-ing drives suck), so I formatted my other Windows HD and installed Red Hat 8.0. Since 4 days ago, I learned a $hit load of things in Linux. I got my all my movies working, my burner working, etc... I'm having fun with my OS, its alot like when I was a kid using Windows. I don't think I'll ever go back to Windows, I'm happy in Linux. Sorry about this post, I just wanted to share my joy with all of you.

I always laugh when I see people in the Computer Scioence lab writing thier programs on windows, saving it to the network drive, then rebooting to linux to compile it.

I first tried Linux back in 99 with a copy of Debian that came with Boot magazine. It never worked, and made me think only super elitist uberhacker geniuses could use it, so I shyed away. At the beginning of 2002, I moved back to it, burned my bridges by deleting Windows, and I haven't looked back since.

There's nothing windows can do that linux can't. I've gotten my digital camera to work (piece of cake really), my PS2 controller to work, I can burn bins, I can burn all kinds of cd formats, and just about anything else I can think of.

I'll switch to Linux as my main OS once I backup all the stuff on my windows installation (I hate backing up...).

As for your IBM drive, you might revive it with a low level format (get utility from ibm.com). Then keep the drive cool during normal operation. I have 3 multiple-failure IBMs that are now running fine with a 80mm fan blowing on them.

The IBM DeathStar! :D We had one of those in the LUG server until it died, too (wait a minute, actually, the drive that died may have been a Seagate 8G SCSI one; in any case, the DeathStar is no longer in there).

Don't apologize for loving the OS. We don't mind ;)
