that pirillo guy is really getting on my nerves this was at the bottom of one of callforhelps mailinglist emails

what arrogance, i think its about time Chris Dibona sit down with him or beat some sense into him just because he's to lazy to put a little bit of effort into it does'nt me you can just write if off the books, but welcome to the problem with todays world laziness oh well

How odd...he use to say good things about Linux, expecially SuSE...

Guess after so many 'stupid windows questions' his brain is fried :D

Lol.

To me it just seems like the comments coming from an ignorant person who has never really seen some of the eye-candy that we have made on a linux system. You can tell that he is really ignorant from the line "no matter what distribution you install". As if it matters what distribution you install. /me sighs. When you can get linux to look EXACTLY like WinXP or OSX, I don't see how he can say that linux has an ugly interface no matter what. Besides - is he suggesting that Windows has a nice interface - with its 10 some-odd customization options - compared with countless customizations you can make in linux (you can even go as far as changing the code). We should send him over to the screenshots thread in these forums (it hasn't been deleted yet, has it?)

Its the brainwashed people that think they are smart that are brainwashing everyone else.

Finally --> I can understand his problem with a lot of other things negative that have all too often been brought up in the inevitable arguement. But INTERFACE???

Oh well. People watching TechTV deserve to be sticking with windows anyway.

Letter just sent to address above...:) Attached jpeg here is only 77% to fit under the 100K size limit.

Hello,

The following was attributed to you at JustLinux.com. If this is incorrect, my apologies.
If it is true, I attached a screenshot of the terrible interface I have to put up with. I mean,
6 virtual destops to keep track of, sharp colors and a snazzy interface...you get the hardship.

No response expected, I never get any for techtv anyway. Just thought you might open your
eyes. Forgive any graininess as this is jeg with only 85% quality to preserve size. If you want the
perfect copy, reply, I'll send it.

I honestly think you could have sent the dude an even better "default" screenshot. Possibly from SuSE or MAndrake. :D

That one isnt bad compared to windows though. Anyone else here get tired of the Xp theme? I dont think i'll ever get tired of any linux desktops. :)

That is my work desktop. I have a snazzier one that is less cluttered and more funky that I use when not working. I use everything on the screen, so it is more 'functional'. Nothing stopping anyone else from sending a gentle 'You don't know what your talking about screenshot'. :)

personnaly i just think pirillo is getting a lil cocky answering all those how to move a folder on the desktop and delete my trash questions is giving him a big head and the ability to memorize a bunch of terms whether you know what they mean or not

sooner or later somebody is gonna tell him that answer questions like that does'nt make him a genious

or if it does ppl like mdwatts and hundreds of other members of this forum are mensa material

but of course that doesnt mean you can act like a jerkoff and make an *** of yourself and read from a teleprompter either

must be a hard life huh

Remember - ALL television shows are funded by corporates. If I were Gates, paying for this show, I would probably want him to say the same thing.

There is another show, run by Dave Chalk that's quite a bit older than Tech TV. I have met him personally. He admits he really can't put in his real opinion :(

Chris Pirillo mat think Linux has an ugly UI, but that does not mean that he is anti-linux. He started a windows email newsletter called Lockergnome in 1998, which has expanded quite a bit over the years, even in the face of the dotcom meltdown. Last year, or maybe the year before, Chris found some people willing to write/edit editions focused on subjects other thatn windows tips&tricks. One such newsletter, called the 'PenguinShell' (http://www.lockergnome.com/issues/penguinshell.html), focuses on linux.
I subscribe to this newsletter, and I find it both useful and informative.
In fact, according to Netcraft (http://www.netcraft.com/oldwhats/?host=help.lockergnome.com%3A80&Examine=Wait..) the Lockergnome forums are running Apache on Linux.

never said he was anit-linux

just pointing out the comment, that someone of his supposed caliber should know better than to say, hell theres just one thread in this forum ie "Screenshots anyone" that can prove that, the point is you expect someone who is supposed to know their tech to know the difference between ugly, and STOCK configuration and if hes comparing linux to XP thats even worse wow you get a whole three colors you can change the taske bar too thats it thats the limit of your fun changing your background but thats not really considered OSX may give some competition but hell you can make linux look and pretty much feel just like OSX too

i like Chris he's a good person, but i think he needs to do his research

To be balance things out, the Lockergnome consortium of which he heads-up has an excellent daily called Penguin Shell on nothing , but Linux. I would suggest subscribing as it's full of distro install reviews and application links and reviews and short tutorials by a pretty knowledgable guy. Here's the online example. The one you receive in your mail is formatted slightly different, nicer IMHO.

Yeah, but that's exactly the sort of thing I expect from PC Mag.

That's most of the reason why we stopped getting it at home. It used to have all sorts of cool tips, programming stuff (of course, it was Win32 -- and usually Delphi -- but hey, you can't have everything), and whatnot, but in the year or so before we stopped renewing, it turned into "how to REALLY delete your history files for IE" EVERY SINGLE ISSUE.

It got quite annoying. "Running Office apps on Linux" is just the kind of thing that makes perfect sense coming from them.

JohnT
02-04-2003, 11:41 AM
PC Mag excerpt....Red Hat Linux 8.0 is headed in the right direction, but it still doesn't quite bridge the gap between Linux and Microsoft Windows

Why does it fall to Linux to bridge the gap. Should the Northside of the Grand Canyon come over to the Southside to bridge the gap. I think it's as prevalent on Windows to come half-way. A bridge is just that "A bridge".

JohnT
02-04-2003, 11:45 AM
PC Mag excerpt.....Hence CrossOver differs from other Microsoft Office–compatible Linux applications in that it actually lets you run Microsoft Office itself on Linux. There is no need to learn a new application.

And MS Office is able to run what?????Hm-m-m, MS Office.

dkeav
02-04-2003, 01:04 PM
hmmm how long would it take linux developers to finish that gap if ms would hand over some source code about a week, couple hours, of course then they wouldnt be able to charge a quarter million for powerpoint and the like anymore

just in case someone is reading my responses wrong, at all times I am being sarcastic, a smartass, and very judgemental, please do not draw conclusions on my character from this post, its all in good fun

If the email went out with his name on it, from his show, with that line in it, then he is responsible for it. Does he not bother to check the emails before they go out? To claim that he was misquoted is insufficient - he either needs to stand by "his" comment, or publish a full retraction, explaining how that line got into "his" email.

hlrguy
02-04-2003, 03:40 PM
I got a reply from my initial email, and basically said that he was misquoted. He stated he would reply directly to this forum so I didn't say anything. I had thought he was going to put the origional statement here. He did mention that, in one CFH episode, he stated that if people wanted to try another OS, OS-10 would suffice, and that Linux was GREAT for the server.

I honestly don't think he has taken a late model version of Linux on the desktop for a 'drive' and still thinks it is only suitable for the server. Where usability and reliability are SO FAR BEYOND CRITICAL cause she is 2000 miles away, my 65+ Mom would disagree and Loves Mandrake. (read DUMPED MS like the bad habit it was cause it just wouldn't remain reliable). She was worried at first, but I had configured it to a T like it would come from the factory preinstalled. NOTHING, ZERO problems since I installed. There was NEVER a time when something wasn't working when she was using Windows. Ever.

Bah, that is just Chris Pirillo. I'd expect him to say something like that. Since he seemed to have (in the past when he started hosting CFH) finding the Keyboard Character Map in Windows. I think I laughed my *** off. Leo was a much better host for CFH, and I never heard him bash Linux.
