this is my public announcement that i am too big of a wuss for debian and have hung my head and installed redhat (what? i can do that from the gui? wow.). after using debian for 2 months, it has whipped my *** into submission. the power of the swirl was too much for me but alas i will return users of debian. after crying in the dojo, i will laugh on the battlefield. so until i am hardcore... goodbye debian.

I just did the reverse. I dumped RedHat for Debian Woody & I love it, but Red Hat is pretty good too. I've been using it for 2 years now & have found it really cool to work with. It's much easier to use RHat untill you get used to linux.
The best thing about Debian is apt-get & the way that they handle installing new software.

I came from RH too. If criatura goes to RH, two weeks from now the frustration will drive him to announce "Ok, I'm back to Debian. I need help with......." :D

I am installing Mandrake 7.2 over Debian 3.0r1 as I type.
I'll try again when I have something more than a P120/32M to try it on. I want to see how it handles the GUI interfaces. It didn't seem any different to me for the CLI...
Mandrake 7.2 is more in line with the P120/32M than Woody is. :)
But, I will say this:
Apt-get is nice, but no nicer than Mandrake's URPMI.

did I read this right?
how is mdk better than debian, especially on old hardware???
oh well, even if another bites the dust, the swirl lives on. Is there some kind of initiation for returning fellow-debianers? :D

Except for the fact that apt gives you far much more.
Can you use branches with urpmi?
Can you pin packages at a certain version with urpmi?
Can you pin certain package repositories at a given installation priority with urpmi?
Can you search the entire online database of packages for a certain capability with urpmi?
Can you even use local repositories with urpmi?
Can you use NFS with urpmi?
Can you do intelligent upgrades (ie, it will remove some packages, install some brand new packages, and upgrade a ton of existing ones, all intelligently) with urpmi?
Can you place packages on "hold" with urpmi?
Not to mention the shortfalls of RPM in general (*cough*file-based dependencies without a centralized, certified repository dictating the de facto winner of who gets to place what files where*cough*)

I didn't think so.
Need I say more? :p

You know, if Debian is to intimidating for you, you really should try Libranet. It's based on Debian, but it's easier for the intermediate/novice user.

GNU/Linux is all about choice and personal freedom. If Debian is not for you, don't sweat it. There are plenty more to choose from...

How about Knoppix (Debian) live CD Linux?
Just DL & burn the ISO
Reboot
You got Knoppix Linux
Use the hd install option
You got Debian
Apt-get
You got whatever you else you want
