Hey guys and gals,

I was wondering what is the best, fast and easy way to get my Windows programs working in Linux (ex. Kazaa Lite, Max Payne, etc..)? I heard of two programs vm ware, and wine which in your exprience are better, or maybe something else? Thanks for the help.

BTW: Why can't I change my avatar?

im still a newb jus keep that in mind when u read.....
wine i tried and its really hard for compiling and stuff for a newb, and plus wine ONLY runs stupid windows applications eg(notepad)
wat i heard on these forms is that wineX(notice the X lol) is excellent game emulator for windows
Vmworkstation i have installed, the thing is vm is a virtual machine thats what is stands for. the machine u host the vmware with has to recognize hardware for linux partition to know that hardware, i tried hosting redhat 7.0 and 8.0 on windows, since my dwl-650+ cardbus adapter wont work on linux thus i dont have internet on linux. eveything works great on vm, but its just a little graphically slow and i had trouble installing vmtools, something u run in order to help with graphics, i couldnt run the GUI for redhat in both versions, but somehow i did during setup

Hey Brock,

If you're willing to pay for VMWare, then that might be an option.

However, I've tried VMWare and it doesn't do everything I'd like. In addition to that, you have to actually install Windows within a virtual workstation (basically, a virtual workstation is a glorified file). Frankly, VMWare is only good for testing software; that's what it was meant to do as so far as I know.

It also requires your hands to get somewhat dirty.

IMHO, I think wine is the way to go; it does require tweaking, but I am of the opinion that anyone can do it.

If you really want to play games, may I suggest checking out Transgamers Wine?

www.transgaming.com

Transgamers is only good for games, though. It doesn't do well on programs as wine does.

Check out www.winehq.org

That website has a searchable application database of programs that can and can't (yet) work in Wine.

As for the something else, you might want to check out Linux alternatives for some of the programs you seek.

Also, FYI, have you checked out the forum FAQ? If not, here's a link:

Brock,

Great! If you have any problems, let me know.

BTW, there's a great Wine-related site at:

http://www.frankscorner.org/wine/

Hope it'll be of use to you!

Hey Joe,

Thanks for the link, I have successfully installed Kazza Lite 1.7.2, however I need some Windows dll's:

COMCTL32.DLL
COMDLG32.DLL
COMMCTRL.DLL
MSVCRT.DLL
RASAPI32.DLL
SHDOCLC.DLL
SHDOCVW.DLL
SHLWAPI.DLL
URLMON.DLL
WININET.DLL

Do you know where I can get these, without installing Windows 98SE ;)

I don't want to install that **** for a few dll's.....

thanks again for the help,

brock

Hey Brock,

Try:

http://www.drd.dyndns.org/search.html

Also, try searching for "dll search" in Google for other websites, in the event that you come up dry when searching for certain DLLs.
