:) does anybody know how can I add applications to my desktop, I also sometimes install programs that only can be run from the console. is it possible to add an icon on the desktop for a such a program?

yes. with kde or gnome you should be able to right-click the desktop and create a shortcut.

with a lightweight window manager you would have to be running a desktop manager in conjunction with your window manager.

Also, if it already exists in your start menu and you are running gnome or kde, click the hat and let go, navigate to the desired application, them click and hold the ICON for the app and drag to the desktop. A dialogue with 'move here, copy here, etc will show up. Copy here.

Right click on any icon to change the name/icon, etc. Check out /usr/share/icons.

if you're using kde:
right click on destop
create new > link to application
just name it
change icon
put program start info in execute
ie:command
xmms
