I am having a typical problem with menu. As stated whenever some app is installed, Menudrake will add it to the menu. But in my machine though the rpmdrake is telling Astronomy/Chemistry/mplayer etc are installed, the menu shows nothing! For example, the Science group only shows Mathematics. I am a newbie and totally confused. Pls help me! Thanks.

looks like you could try to use the kmenuedit to fix your menu. I would also look at you home directory. I would think your menu would be in some config file you could edit by hand. Maybe ~/.menu or ~/.kde/menu, or something. Dont know how the directory structure goes in MDK or kde, but its worth a look.

looks like there's also a "MenuDrake" proggy to edit your menu???

I've had the same problem.
Try logging out of your current KDE session then log back in and the new menu entries should be showing.

The problem I faced is just the opposite! When, for example, I installed VariCAD, it appeared in the Applications menu. Now I logged out with saving the session and next time I logged in...it's gone! It is installed in the /opt dir, but I had to add it again in menu manually. Is it supposed to happen?

No, it's not supposed to happen.
I installed several rpms today and noticed that menu entries for other packages disappeared afterward and I also seem to now have 2 of every entry in configuration > printing.

Just right-click on KDE start menu button and access the menu editor and edit your menu's appropriatly. This isn't a perfect world, but you can edit. If your installs are there and they work it's a simple matter. Sometime it calls to save your editing before closing the editor.

I just have a icon on the desktop for things I use often. Its easier than looking in the menu

even more efficient are key-bindings.

<and the rest you can just launch from an aterm>
