I would highly recomend the switch. If I had a spare grand or two i would buy a G4 in a second. I'm affraid you have been mislead about OSX being linux, it's based on BSD, (whether it's freebsd or openbsd i don't know). It however is not just an exact copy, Apple have made some modifications, (though i don't know specifics), and put aqua their own GUI ontop, which from my limeted experience and my friends far more advanced use I have found to be very elegant, easy to use, and bug free.
Hope this helps, also check out the website, it has lots of information and howtos etc.
Ooh, and also Macs are sooo much cooler.

Actually, OS X is UNIX-based. Quite stable. There are plenty of video/film editing softwares available. I am running Jaguar with my G4.
Setting up OS X is dead easy. You do not have to worry about that. It is, also, almost too easy to use. I use Macintosh, exclusively, at home. I use G4 Ti on the road, as well as Toshiba laptop with Windows XP. I cannot stop asking "why is this...?" Every time I would switch to Windows XP.
Yes, you should definitely go with a G4!
Also, there are plenty of distros for PowerPCs. I am using yellowdogLinux myself.
