I can't afford a new ps2 console but I can afford a dvd-rom drive. mrBen 01-24-2003, 08:21 AM See http://www.google.com/search?sourceid=navclient&q=linux+ps2+emulator Elijah 01-24-2003, 08:34 AM Thanks MrBen, sorry I could've searched first ... but there are a lot of emu's out there, anyone tried them all?: which is the best you've tried so far that works in linux? edit: bad choice of words ;) Jomboni 01-24-2003, 08:41 AM There aren't any PS2 emulators that are even close to playing games. PS1 emulators aren't even that far along yet... Elijah 01-24-2003, 08:55 AM epsxe works quite well on windows, haven't tried it in linux though. I guess I'll wait for the emu to come out, you're right it's too early for this, but I'll be missing a lot. carrja99 01-24-2003, 11:35 AM Oh GOD... here it comes again... people who want emulators for next gen consoles. There is a PSX emu. There is not a ps2 emu (one that runs games, at least). Why? Here is the picture... hardware emulation requires alot of resources in order to emulate the hardware properly. So, you won't be able to run a SNES emulator on a PC that has the same speed. Simularly, a PSX has a clock speed of 33.8688 MHz, yet it would barely run on a 233mhz PC (at least it didnt on mine). The PS2 has a clock speed of 300 MHz, but this isn't the end. It also has a Memory Bus Bandwidth of 3.2 GB, and as well it uses alot of different hardware for it's graphics acceleration that matches some of what is out for PCs, but again uses different hardware styles. Add to the fact that it uses 128-bit Emotion Engine and has a floating point capacity of 6.2 GFLOPS, you're gonna need some pretty top of the line hardware to run it!! Sorry, but as a former operator in an emlation channel, and someone who has been involved with the emulation scene for years now, it alwas gets on my nerves when people beg for emulators for Next Gen consoles... if it's not listed on www.zophar.net (or any other big emu sites), then chances are it doesn't exist! EDIT: Btw, while I'm ranting, I may as well point at another reason to hate microsoft. "The first publicly released emulator for the XBOX, MAME-X is a port of the arcade emulator MAME. After only a few days, legal issues with Microsoft stopped development and binary downloads from the former site. This emulator is in a sticky situation for the moment...we're not sure if it will ever resume development." It was pretty sad too... MAME is one of the best reasons for emulation (I enjoy playing a game of Metal Slug, Samurai Shodown 4, or Marvel Vs. Capcom on my pc) and a MAME port was very nice indeed. Oh well... Thanks for taking the time in filling me in with the concept. But I'm not exactly 'begging' anyone to make one, I've been busy in awhile and I believe the ps2 has aged for quite a bit now (although it's still a next gen console) so I thought I might want to find out if it even existed or is still in development (it'll probably take years, or never). btw. that's a good link there. Elijah 01-24-2003, 01:01 PM but if we're talking about the hardware here, well it won't I guess, based on your info. Unless these games are ported somewhat. :) All I can do now is wait and see what happens ... edit: but then again It could be possible due to the future processors and upgrades .... although it'll take time I guess Any 01-24-2003, 01:14 PM Cant any of you say theft? Elijah 01-24-2003, 01:20 PM Originally posted by Any Cant any of you say theft? used to, but not anymore. I've been using original games now(pc). If the ps2 emu ever get completed I'll go read up on websites to find out the 'top' games only and buy them. Any 01-24-2003, 01:23 PM Originally posted by Elijah used to, but not anymore. AAAAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA Your saying that when you can get a PS2 emulator then you will go and buy the games before you download them? Even if you do do that, its probably still illegal. Elijah 01-24-2003, 01:26 PM no only the emu will be downloaded but the games will be bought. Any 01-24-2003, 01:27 PM Thats what i mean. You are really going to buy games when you dont own a PS2? Elijah 01-24-2003, 01:41 PM hmmm, you're right about that I have to admit. Forget this thread then, I'll stick to ps1 where I actually own the unit. Thanks for clearing that out of my brain. Damn!! what's wrong with me!! <shakes head> Any 01-24-2003, 01:44 PM Errmm, even if you own the unit you know its still illegal to download games that you dont own(even that maybe illegal)? Elijah 01-24-2003, 01:46 PM Originally posted by Any Errmm, even if you own the unit you know its still illegal to download games that you dont own(even that maybe illegal)? I never download/ed roms :D Penrich 01-24-2003, 02:03 PM Why would it be illegal to buy the games if you don't own the actual PS2? I could go out and buy them (e.g. to give as gifts) but I don't own a PS2. nickptar 01-24-2003, 02:14 PM Arguably, it's illegal because Sony loses a customer. Of course, this is utter hogwash; the more common word is COMPETITION. Microsoft is saying something like this with the Xbox: they don't like Xbox-Linux and similar projects because the Xbox itself is sold at a loss and their real profits are from game royalties. The answer is simple: raise the Xbox hardware price and lower game royalties (and thus game prices). But Microsoft feels it has to be the ultimate cathedral, outlawing any bazaar within 100 miles. carrja99 01-24-2003, 02:30 PM What is sad is that Microsoft is quickly trying to curb emulation for XBOX (meaning, emus that run on Xbox, i.e. SNES emu for XBOX). Even though the Dreamcast failed and no new games are developed for it, I still use it, and probably always will, for the sake of emulation. It's nice being able to sit back and play some good ol' NES games with some friends in the full nostaligic glory. When ran on NesterDC, those old NES games still feel exactly like the real thing. There has been several nights my friends and I have played a game of RBI baseball, took turns at Mike Tyson's Punchout, and played through a game of Contra. I know there are some out there who will try and argue "so what!? There's NES emus on the PC, why would you need a console to emulate NES games?" Simple... it kinda takes away from the atmosphere to have your friends crowd around the monitor, rather than sit back on the couch, drink some beers, and enjoy a game of River City Ransom on the 35" Color TV. :D Elijah 01-24-2003, 02:35 PM ahh, I remember my first 'legal' game Chrono Trigger, still my favorite snes game. I'm getting nostalgic here :) time to turn in .... carrja99 01-24-2003, 02:37 PM Over winter break, I stayed on campus, and got snowed in. I spent my time beating Final Fantasy 1. justlinux.com
