I just got DSL, and unfortunately, I am brand new to Linux, and clueless. (But I have not given up on it).I am running Mandrake 9.0 and Windows on the same machine. I have an Efficient 5200 DSL modem connected via USB and they say that I do not need a specific driver or patch to get it to work on Linux. The modem people say it is a NIC problem. What the heck is that, "an NIC problem"? Is that something to do with the USB? I have tried going to Hardrake and it does list the hardware, but what do I do from there? HELP - PLEASE!!! And if you can leave as much detail as possible I would appreciate it (No, I would LOVE it).
Thanks - Jim

I see... I think

This modem comes (from the Efficient website) with BOTH usb and ethernet connections. That would explain why someone is mentioning a NIC to you .. (it would be plugged into an ethernet nic as an alternative).

I'm having some trouble figuring out what drivers would work here ... but .. I'll hunt about for a while longer

one thing .. you could post the contents of
/proc/bus/usb/devices
and that might help ...

Its kinda interesting looking at this from a windows perspective, they appear to have the drivers for this device split up by network provider (isp) name ... weird..but they do have a generic driver .. that points to the speedstream driver page... which doesn't tell me a lot.

I would hazard a guess and suggest that your best (easiest and fastest) bet would be to use the ethernet port if you can ... (i.e. does your mobo have a built in network card, do you have a network card in the machine?) -- unless of course said network card is already in use... *grin*

There is support for speedtouch DSL USB modems... but it seems somewhat proprietary ... once I've done some more reading on the EN5200 (if I can find something intelligent about it) I'll let ya know if its worth trying that route.
