you can refer to the linux Hardware support list from www.linux.org or read the document in the kernel source code.

You can check the hardware compatibility list at Redhats website. Any IDE or SCSI or even USB should work. You might want to check some of the reviews at pcworld.com etc for ideas on a good writer.

I have only used HP SCSI and USB with linux and didn't have any problems.

Im using RH8 and my burner is a lite-on machine. It is by Buslink, and is a 40X12X48X burner. If you are using the default tools under RedHat 8.0, gnome toaster, and most other apps, will only let you burn at 24X. Which isn't bad as it is, but doesn't exploit the potential of alot of cd-rw drives out there. (including mine):(

It all depends on what your planning to add. I have found that Yamaha makes reliable SCSI drives. I own 2 of them. For IDE, I have been told Plextor makes a good one. I put an IDE Yamaha in my sister's computer (due to price and brand name). I currently have the Yamaha 16x10x40 SCSI and have no problems burning at 12x, but the machine sometimes makes costers at 16x, but I can deal with the extra time for reliable burns.

I have no experiance with USB drives besides I have had issues with windows and USB CD-Rs, so I'm not sure how Linux deals.

Nathan.

Arson is the best cdburning program I have run across in Linux. Or anywhere.

I've used HP, Yamaha, Sony and LG's and all have worked well and without problems in Linux.
