I have installed Redhat 8.0 with kernel 2.4.18-14. It seems that hard drive access is slow. I have a Seagate 80GB 7200rpm hard drive. My motherboard is and ECS L7VTA with a VIA chipset.

How could I know if my harddrive is accessed using UDMA33 only? Also how could I set it to use UDMA100?

look at a tool called hdparm, for setting the dma mode, specifically the -X flag, although there are many other things to tune to make your HD faster.
