ld: final link failed: No space left on device

The device that you are trying to install it to has no space left. Get a bigger device.

It should still work without having a windows drive, you'll just run programs from a "fake" windows drive( meaning a dir like /home/username/.wine/c ).

ok

after i got that error in the previous message it asked me if i wanted to install wine-only i said no

should i have said yes? if so should i do the 30 minutes install again to say yes?

i tried to install wine again and got this warning:

Warnign !! wine binary(still) found, which may indicate a (conflicting) previous installation.
you might want to abort and uninstall wine first

how would i go about uninstalling it?

mocnicom

to uninstall type "make uninstall" from the same directory that you ran "./tools/wineinstall" from. Oh yeah, make sure you "su" or are root when you run "make uninstall". Then Re-install and choose wine only or whatever that other option was.

Try "wine notepad" doesn't matter which dir you're in for this example. If a notepad clone loads up then wine works, if not, then your config is probably wrong.

ok i got wine to load notepad, and i went through the instructions at franks corner to load dreamweaver through wine but when i try to isntall dcom95.exe it says:

/usr/bin/wine.bin: cannot find 'dcom95'

and when i try to do run wine with the path to the dreamweaver folder it wont let me put in folders that have spaces

Don't know anything about wine and am not the least bit curious, but dcom95.exe if I remember correctly is part of the IE package.

Here's the download for dcom95.exe........................................ ..

You need to escape those spaces first. Therefore if you're trying to CD to a directory whose names have spaces (say the directory named "Dreamweaver MX") you need to place the "\" character (w/out quotes) before you enter a space.

i.e. cd /home/yourusername/.wine/fake_windows/Program\ Files/Macromedia/Macromedia\ MX

BTW, you need to cd to the folder that has the dcom95.exe file before running the wine command. And you probably need to execute it under wine with the .exe as suffix.

Santino,

Just my two cents here. Linux is Linux, Windows is crappy, ummm, well Windows is Windows.

For the life of me I cannot figure out why someone switches to Linux and gripes over windows programs.

Its kinda like jumping off a cliff, you either jump or not, there is no in between.

In other words, forget wine, run windows you will be happier in your case.

My own two cents...

Windows is horrible. But that doesn't mean that programs that run under Windows are also horrible.

Unfortunately, in my many years of experience with computers, I don't think that the "jumping off a cliff" analogy works. Unless you're talking about the process that comes before the final decision -- which is, in the case of a Windows to Linux convert, to convert fully or not. And even then the example is weak.

To be honest with everyone, I haven't converted fully over to Linux yet. My laptop is still a dual-boot, but I haven't booted it over to Windows in 4 weeks now. There are some things that Linux doesn't do that Windows does (my laptop, for instance, has a SmartMedia card reader built in and I haven't gotten that to work under Linux). As I use a digital camera with the SmartMedia card, I'm kinda stuck with Windows. (And getting a cable for my camera is out of the question -- too expensive for what I use it for.)

Fact of the matter is, I like the idea of wine. (Let the torches begin burning the woodpile I've just set up underneath myself. ;)) I used it to get two programs I used to go over to boot into Windoze to use. (Dreamweaver MX and Flash 5.) Wine, in my humbly informed opinion, can be (and sometimes is) a great transition tool for computer users previously indoctrinated into the Windows state of mind. (The same state of mind which convinces people to rush out to get the newest version of the OS despite the fact that every version is riddled with new bugs that haven't been flushed out yet. There's hindsight for you. )

However, Linux isn't for everyone. Yet. Everyone uses a level of technology that they are comfortable with. As much as I hate to say it, if you're more comfortable with Windows then stick with Windows. Then, if you want to try out Linux again, come back in a few years.

However, if you wish to try and work through your problems, then you must be willing to give a little. Because Linux isn't Windows. And, no way in the eternal fires of hell, Windows isn't Linux.

Sorry if it seems to people like an OT semi-rant... However, I think this needed to be said.

how do i setup wine with that fake windows directory

i was able to access the dreamweaver exe file but i was missing a dll file, which is prolly why i need to isntall that dcom95.exe file but everytime i try to access it it says it can never find it this is the command im using to execute it

wine /mnt/hd/linux_stuff/dcom95.exe

and this is the error i get:

/usr/bin/wine.bin: cannot find 'dcom95.exe'

There's a program called WineTools that FranksCorner.org offers. It can create a fake windows directory easily, manage your config files, install TTFs for Windows Apps and a few other features that might be of interest.
