Updating the Kernel

Okay, I have an older system with the 2.4.14 kernel on it and I need to update it to get a pcmcia card to work. I got the 2.4.20 update patch from kernel.org, but I dont know how to update it. What all do I have to do to update/recompile the kernel?

what Linux distro are you running? I would check out this link for help with the kernel recompile http://www.linuxnewbie.org/nhf/Compiling_Kernels
