OK, here's the deal, I got Mandrake 9.0 running on my puter and I'm trying to install win2k to dual boot, can I just go install win2k or do i have to reformat then do 2k and then mandrake. I just got mandrake running somewhat perfect and if i gotta take it down I think I'll shoot someone, please tell me there's a way!!

what is your partition situation and where will you be installing the Win2k system?

I have a 30 gig with a 4 gig linux part and the rest in another, i think. Do i have to worry about my master boot record too??

yes you do have to worry about your mbr
i would suggest going to freshmeat and getting a program called something like"make cd recovery" it is essentially a ghosting program you can backup your mdk install so you can put it back on just like it is
then format the hd and install windows first setting up your partiton in the win install ie just leave extra space then copy your mdk back to that space

I think that when you install Win2K it will overwrite the MBR. Then, mandrake probably won't boot. You'll have to boot mandrake with a cd or floppy. After that, however, you just have to rerun LILO or whatever booting program you're using. That will rewrite it's info into the MBR and, assuming the boot program is configured properly, you should be able to boot both partitions fine. One thing to look out for is that I think the Win installmust think it is on the first partition. If it is not located in the first partition, the booting program (LILO or GRUB or whatever) has to have some commands set to fool windows into believing it's on the first partition. I'm sure it's all possible but it's a bit easier to install windows first (on the first partition) then linux. Maybe next time.

I'm running a dual boot system Win2k and Mandrake 9.0 beta. After several attempts to get it running properly I found that I had to install Win2k first, create the space for the linux partition during the Win2k install THEN install Linux. Edit the lilo.conf if Win2k is to be the default boot.

I'm going to have 98se, linux and w2k on three consecutive primary 8Gb partitions of a WD 80Gb SE IDE HD.
I'm going to have 98 on the first and w2k on the third as an M$ dual boot.
Then I want to install Linux (knoppix/Debian) on the second partition just inside the 8.4Gb BIOS limit of my PPro200 SMP dual processor computer.
Do I need LILO or GRUB or can linux just boot from its own plain vanilla bootloader?
