I am installing this operating system on a new intel computer. I am using a 40 Gig Western Digital drive which has not been formated or partitioned. When I go to install mandrake I get the beginning screen which says press enter to install mandrake, but then the screen just goes black. Do I have to do anything prior to installing this on my machine? Thanks.

Maybe you have to partition it first.
What about Knoppix? What problems did you have running it from the CD? Once in Knoppix, you should be able to partition and even format the HD.
You shouldn't even need a HD with Knoppix 3.1.

Boot knoppix
When all loading stops, hit CTRL-ALT-F1
Enter
cfdisk if not working try, fdisk
Delete all partitions. Create a big one. Type ext2/3. Mount /. Write and exit.
