I've been trying a few different distributions of linux and am running into a common problem - install works fine, text log-in fine, then X fails to load. Inconsistant messages (but repeditive after a while). Mainly concerning 'screens exist/found but none valid'. I've tried every combination in XF86config but no joy. Latest try was with Redhat 8.0. It correctly detected my Geforce4 card, allowed me to enter my exact monitor (AOC spectrum 7Glr) but still falls over when loading X. I have very limited knowledge of how to run things from the command line...all new to me....but have done a LOT of reading and found nothing...anyone help?

Why not try going to www.nvidia.com and download the latest Linux Display Drivers?

was going there, but couldn't work out why I would have to since it detected the card OK - I realise I should get latest drivers for enhancements but basic functionality should be ok. Anyway, set to display to 16bit instead of 24 and worked ok, so now all running OK. Detected soundcard automatically too which was a nice change! Latest drivers might sort the 24bit thing...

Detecting and supporting the GeForce 4 in Linux are 2 different things. Just because Red Hat detects it, doesn't mean it knows how to use it. That's the reason why I set the resolution I want, with the color depth I want. Then choose to have the X-Window system not start upon boot. After the setup of Linux finishes, I load in the NVidia drivers. Works everytime without fail.
