Hello. i am new to linux still, know some baisics.
Ive been trying to get redhat 8 on my system for the past 3 days, no luck yet.
I have XP on the system aswell but i know thats not the issue.
I made a 6gb extended primary partiton at front of drive for linux and a primary 32gb partiton fo windows behind it (within the extended will also be my windows system cache. This way no need to worry about 1024 cylinder limit.
Well i go to do a normal install (personal one) whatever is selected by default.
btw: got no errors when partitoning
And when it getsto installing (copying packedges). Right when the bar gets to the end it exits. I wrote down the entire error message and stuff. I have burned redhat 8 cd1 and cd2 3 times nows, (3 copys of both cds) all give me same **** , i burned them all with different programs and one even with a different burner. so im convinced its not the media im installing from. I also did a test on each one and they where a PASS. well anyway here it is

(anaconda :87): GnomeCanvas-CRITICAL
**:file gnome-canvas-path-def.c: line 1142
(gnome_canvas_path_any_closed): assertion 'path !=NULL' failed
install exited abnormally

disableing /dev/loop0
/proc done
/dev/pts done
/mnt/sysimage/boot done
/mnt/sysimage/dev/pts done
/mnt/sysimage/proc done

you may safely reboot your system

I would really appriciate any help possible.... please.

Is it a AMD CPU? It's not compatible with RH8. Check out their list on their website.

Yeah it might not be the media. It could be the downloads. Did you check their md5sum's?

i have a Athlon 1.4 cpu, i checked redhats compatibility list and athlon's are supported.
Now by checking the md5sums... How do i do that, i did the cd check when i go to install linux.. and both where a pass.

i did not getit about the extended partition (on which you installed Linux) being a system cache for Windows. I think you are confused, the ext2/ext3 are native Linux filesystems like FAT/FAT32/NTFS, they have nothing to do with extended partitions. My advice is you to delete that extended partition you created, resize you NTFS Windows XP so it goes to the beginning of the HD. Resize Windows again, living 6GB of "unalocated" space at the end of your HD. Than try to install Linux.

i woudl rather leave windows at back of drive and put redhat in front because then disk druid goes infront of me and plus, ive installed windows 4 times inthe past 3 days.
So if i delete the extended partionion in the front of the drive, and install linux to that free space it should work?

Windows won't boot if you install it after 1024 cylinder , you will have to reinstall Windows again, 5-th time :)

I dont believe i have a 1024 cylinder problem because i have dual booted redhat 8 with linux at end of drive (no /boot at front of drive, But i just went to install redhat 8 on the unallocated space and it quit again after copying packeges.

Btw: does redhat 7.3 support geforce 4, if so i can install it, 7.2 worked so im guessing 7.3 will. But tis only redhat giving my a pain. if windows dont boot after i install linux at head of drive ille just reormat tomorrow.

we just can't reach the common sence :), Linux goes to the end of the drive that's right.

installed XP , went to install redhat 8... exact same error again, XP has 30gb in front of drive and linux 8 at end of drive.
Install exited abnormally again.... i do not like this.
All i wann do is install redhat 8 without it being abnormally exited. It didnt do it before so why is it being an *** now :(

well im tired :o so im gonna get soem sleep, let me know what do to next.

its probably irrelevant to putting it at the end. if it exited abnormally, I would recommend just trying to reinstall linux vs. trying to see what';s missing and fixing it (just too much of a hassle)

frankly, metzad, I'd be as upset as you are and just throu that CD in the garbage. RedHat could be too much in a hurry to make a distro. I had installed RH8.0 myself than went back to 7.3, I had a reason too. Maybe you should consider trying a different distribution.

see, the thing is the media is good. Ive installed from the first set before. I dont think its the cds, im starting to think its my system. But the thing is redhat 8 worked before and not now... Its very strange. The only hardware ive changed os my network card (from dlink 538tx to intel pro/100 (the intel pro/100 is supported by redhat) and i did check compatibility lists on the card at redhats website. I have now subscribed to redhats forums in order to find a solution.

good... i'm not crazy... :-)

I have a P75(yeah, yeah, I know), 64mb, a 2.5gb hard drive... and I would get the same error at various stages of the install... I did everything as suggested by anaconda, and it would just up and quit at various stages - although, during the graphical install, I'd occasionally get an error saying that some package couldn't be installed, it was a fatal error, and I'd have to start over from scratch...

(and normally that wouldn't be a horrible thing, but do you have any idea how slow the installer runs on a P75? :p )

If you have a p75 I would recommend a linux that was made to run on less resources (Vector Linux, Peanut linux, all those floppy linuxes out there, etc.) If you insist on the RH, maybe you should get an earlier version. This way you will have an xfree86 version that can actually run on your requirements, and so forth.

Just my $0.02.

BTW, I've done with worse...anythign from 300MB HD debian installs, to 30 MB "floppy linux" installs.

Common, somebody's gotta know whats causeing anaconda to exit abnormally, or there must be a way to make it not exit abnormally. It worked before but now it dont install. Just before boot disk creation (right after copying packages) redhat 7.2 installs without a hiccup, if i cant get this working i will end up installing redhat 7.3 (i would rather use 8 though).
BTW: where can i get 8.1 beta, it think it may be worth trying (it might install).

Fixed it,
At BOOT: type the following to setup redhat 8 without crashing it.

linux text nodma noapic
