I've just installed Mandrake 8.2 and I am having trouble with the root user. Each time I login as root with the password I set during install, the system comes back with Login Incorrect. However I can use su and the root password to change to the root after logging in as myself.

Being a complete Linux newbie, is there something really basic that I am missing.

Thanks,

Could it be a security setting in Mandrake 8.2 that does not allow you to logon as root and only use 'su'?

I wondered about that. In my searching I've read about problems people were having with some of the lower security settings. I chose the setting of "Higher" for a server.

Is there a way of changing it to a lower setting without reinstalling.

You should be able to su to root in a terminal and then start the app you use to set the security levels.
