Hi guys, this is my first post, checked out the site alot and it helped me alot, thanks. Any ways, finally got my internet sharing working but the connection blows. I have ADSL, which works great on my llinux mandrake server thing, but for my other win ME comp it keeps diso'ing and it's slow as all hell. Any ideas?? My server is a 700 mhz 384 ram (works fine), my other is a 266 mhz 256 ram monster running ME, thanks:mad:

First off, do you have any other choice but to run ME on that machine? I'd be willing to bet it'd run a little better if you downgraded it to Win98 or even 95.
Second, are you saying it runs slow when you plug the DSL modem into it, or are you connecting to the net through the Linux server?
If you're hooking the modem directly to the WinME box to get the connection, you should consider looking at running "IP Masquerading" on your Linux box, buying a second NIC, and getting a hub of you already don't have one.
Maybe it will help if you use the Linux box as a gateway through which the WinME box can connect to the net using IP Masquerading. A pretty good tutorial can be found here (http://www.ibiblio.org/pub/Linux/docs/HOWTO/other-formats/html_single/Masquerading-Simple-HOWTO.html) for setting up a simple IP Masq network.

Sounds like something in your firewall is off a bit, or possibly a bad cable. If you only have a few machines on your network, I suggest dropping dhcp and assigning a static address system (192.168.0.0), it makes firewalling easier (IMHO). Yeah and ME never played nice with my Squid server either, so I killed ME. Post your firewall script and we can take a look to see if it's the culpret.

OK, got a another dumb question, if i have dhcp set up i still need to put in my DNS and gateway right?? I really gotta lay off the crack a bit:)
yes put in your isp nameserver in /etc/resolve.conf
use your gateway address for eth0 the one connected to the internet and 192.168.0.1 for eth1 intranet
make sure these adress are in /etc/hosts
with su on do
#cd /etc/rc.d/init.d
#./named start
it]'s agood idea to open a log file on a terminal
using #tail -f /var/log/messages
check here to seee that named has no errors and you should be ok.

Stoney,
Win-ME BLOWS for networking. I have my ME machine "worked"
to my 98 machine. Sometimes the ME machine is fine other times it's not. It's never consistant. I'm switching to Win-2000 tomorrow. Just got the disk from Dirt Cheap Software. After that
I'm going to try Linux RH8. Need a new modem though. Mine isn't
compatible.
