I'm trying to install RH 8 on an old 486-DX66 with only 24 MB ram, but plenty of HD. The install goes well (though slow) until it is time to make the boot floppy. It crashes/dumps if the selection is to make a boot floppy.

If the floppy creation is skipped, it appears to proceed correctly, but skips installing GRUB with the message that no kernel changes were made (even though this is a reformatted disk install).

After failing a number of times I pulled out some disks for RH 6.2. I made a startup disk by doing the "dd" copy of the boot.img file to a floppy...I get a boot failed message... (At one time I had an early Mandrake versions running, so I know the machine will run Linux).

I would never install RH8/MDK9 on a 486 or even P2.

You don't need old disks to boot new Linux. Just use your new Linux CD1. Boot it into rescue mode. chroot to your installed linux. fix the problem.

If you must, I'd recommend Slackware 8.1 with fluxbox. Forget KDE & Gnome.

I would advise you to check the minimum requirements for Redhat 8.0.

Installing RH 8.0 on those system specs would be similar to installing W2K/XP.
