I recently moved and don't have the cash for my cable modem anymore...:(. Anyway, so I am trying to use my dial up now. The modem is a Actiontec MD56ORD V92 MDC.....at least that is what winblows says about it. Its in a laptop. It is not a winmodem though. So in the NHF it says to do a cat proc/pci. Here is the relevant part:
Modem: PCI device 8086:2486 (Intel Corp.) (rev 2).
IRQ 11.
I/O at 0xd400 [0xd4ff].
I/O at 0xdc00 [0xdc7f].
Bus 1, device 0, function 0:
So according to the NHF I should type:
setserial /dev/ttyS2 uart 16550A port 0xd400 irq 11
When I do this it causes a hard crash....have to reset. So I decided to skip the step thinking maybe it is already set. So I did a pppconfig, and set everything. When it got to the point of what to use as modem, I chose ttyS0. I got the error:
sh: -c: line 3: unexpected EOF while looking for matching `"'
sh: -c: line 4: syntax error: unexpected end of file
Internal error at /usr/sbin/pppconfig line 157.
I get this error for every ttyS* selection. Any help would be great. I hate having to reboot into winblows to get online. And I cant run dselect without a internet connection. Thanks again.

You should only need to create a symlink from the actual com port to /dev/modem.
ln -s /dev/ttyS# /dev/modem
For #
com1 = 0
com2 = 1
com3 = 2
Then follow the Kppp NHF to setup your modem.

:confused: It returned 2 ports? That's strange. I have never seen that.
uart 16550AThat should be uart 16550a.

Actiontech isn't made by Intel is it. On my system, IRQ 11 is my intel onboard video driver. You may have tried to link your serial port to your video card or PCI bridge causing the crash. The two addresses makes me think something like that happened since andy /proc/pci I have seen or helped with shows only one address.

Tried the sym link...nothings changed. I do think some weird things are going on though. Everything seems to use two addresses and irq 11. I'll post /proc/pci at the end. Tried changing A to a also. I think since everything uses same irq there must be some kind of controller card or bridge or something. And sound card is Intel. Anyway, heres the file.

Everything seems to use IRQ11 is right!?! Have you tried moving the modem to another slot? Totally grasping at straws now! IRQ11 seems to be the main IRQ for everything with different offsets.

Wait, before that, make sure Pnp OS is off in the BIOS.

negative on both. its a laptop..modem needs to be where it is to fit in case. No option for pnp in bios. Dell has VERY limited bios options....mostly boot order and time.

It looks like a driver for that modem is not installed
standard.

The good news is that it is an OEM of Lucent's chipset, so installing a lucent winmodem driver should do the trick. Follow the link in the above page, download the RPM for your distro and it should then show up. From helping others with Lucent modems, the install/support is fantastic and if it installs clean, you can just fire up kppp and connect.

Man I thought we had it. The tar file compiled to a deb fine and installed ok given the modem as /dev/ttyTL0. Strange designation, but anyway tried pppconfig as I don't have kppp installed. Same error. Even tried /dev/modem which was a sym link created in the process. So I read the docs and found you can do a lspci -nv and check the ranges to verify that it is a OEM Lucent. I should have a range of 04** - 04**. Forgot the other two numbers but all that is important is the 04 in my case because the part on my modem gave:
00:1f.6 Class 0703: 8086:2486 (rev 02)
Subsystem: 14f1:5421
Flags: bus master, medium devsel, latency 0, IRQ 11
I/O ports at d400 [size=256]
I/O ports at dc00 [size=128]
Which gave me 2486. The docs says this is not a Lucent modem. Also did a lspci -v and only saw Intel by the name. Didn't see any Lucent designations anywhere. So close......

Rats, I was hoping that when I arrived, you would happily state you were online. I will keep trying to help you find a driver. At lease we know that is what you need. :)

When I did a complere search on your full modem name, the only hits were for windows drivers. I suspect that your only bet is to get a supported pcmcia modem.
Well, sorry we didn't get it going. I did search for pcmcia modem on ebay and there were a LOT from $8.99-$30.

Thank you for all the help. Really I will just be patient and use windows right now for online stuff. I will be moving at the end of the month to goto grad school and will probally get a cable modem again. The NIC has already worked at my old house. Was hoping there was a easy fix just so I wouldn't have to look at windows. Thanks again.
I had the same problem and wanted to know if you ever resolved the dialup with modem issue or if anyone has a work around.

Which problem? The same as the original posted in this thread?

Sorry, but I never resolved this problem. When I moved I got cable service and the NIC works fine. You may want to start a new post to get help explaining what your specific issues are.
