If mandrake cannot detect your sound card auto, then does that mean that it is to old or too new to recognize it? And is there another way for mandrake to detect your sound card other than harddrake?

Not having PnP OS disabled in the bios can also be the cause.

You can install a package called "sndconfig" and it will work.
It worked for me!

naming that problematic sound card might help a little too!

"sndconfig" is included with Red Hat and Mandrake. Go to packages and find "sndconfig". You just need to "check" that program and it will ask you for a cd to insert (I think CD1 for Mandrake and CD3 for Red Hat).

What sound card are you using? Is it an ISA or PCI type card? Sndconfig won't work for all soundcards.

I have a similar problem, with the difference that my sounds of xmms are fine, just that i cant select any sound device within the game "Tribes 2".

When i try to change (set) values for my SB Live Value! (PCI) within HarDrake 1.1.8 it somehow doesnt accept any. It just leaves them blank.

I disabled PnP OS in the BIOS, same effect.

I installed the sndconfig rpm from the Mandrake CD, but....that sounds silly i know - i can just find example sound files called sndconfig, but not the program itself. For someone like me who isnt familiar with the directory structure of Linux, installing programs and running them (as rpm) is really irritating because you never know where the packet installer puts them. Maybe i just missed something in the documentation or i am too stupid.

Bear with me, i installed Linux for the first time 2 days ago :)

Any help would be very appreciated.

edit: i figured out how to start the program, but it says it doesnt support my soundcard :/

Actually i finally figured it out for mandrake:
in console type urpmi sndconfig

You will have to have CD 1 ready to put into the cd drive because mandrake searches that cd for the sndconfig and installs it, simple and easy, then run it.
