The Anti-Void

I've been cleaning out the menu on my redhat 8.0 system. Everything was going fine until I started the control center and I noticed that all the config options were gone.
What's strange about this problem is that I made no changes whatsoever to the main preferences menu. However I did hide the entire extras tree, including extras-->preferences.
To try to get things back to normal, I unhid the extras-->prefrerences entries/menu. However after I did this, the control center seemed to latch upon extras-->preferences menu and not the main one so my control center options now consist of desktop settings wizzard and desktop change tool. Aargh!
I see a workaround by moving everyting in preferances to the extras, but I don't want to do this since I'm trying to prune the menus as much as possible.
How do I tell kconrol to look in preferences and not extras-->preferences (its default behavior)?
