On this page: http://fluxbox.sourceforge.net/download.php
There is nothing about Fluxbox for Red hat, Do I replace the Mandrake version for it? since it is .rpm ? Does anyone else run it on their Red hat box?

There's 2 rpms - the Mandrake Source RPM and a plain Source RPM.
Use the Source RPM.

What happened in the terminal is too big to paste into here so I uploaded it onto my site:
http://0versight.com/fluxbox.txt
It says Fluxbox requires the X Window System libraries and headers. I have KDE, isnt that a X Window System?

KDE is a front end to the X windows system (XFree86 to be exact). So if you have kde you almost certainly have what you need for the X files.

I found this thing called Package management, I assume its what you're talking about, I have everything installed except for:
Gnome Desktop Environment
X Software Development
and several servers

run the command redhat-config-packages or click on the Red Hat, then System Settings then Packages and install the X Software Development packages under the Development option. I did this last weekend and it will then install fine :D

I compiled and installed Fluxbox, but im stuck with these directions:
Now you need to edit (or create) a file in your home directory called .xinitrc. Now you just added the following line:
exec /usr/local/bin/fluxbox
Change the /usr/local/bin/fluxbox to where ever your fluxbox executable is. Once that is done, save it and close whatever program you used to edit it (hopefully vim .
It says to add a directory .xinitrc. , but I dont see it at all? I dont even know where my Fluxbox executable is at?
These are the directions im using:
http://fluxbox.sourceforge.net/docs/en/newdoc.starting.php#newbies

I'm still having problems running Fluxbox, I'm kinda confused with your directions beckman.
I have created a text file called .xinitrc with this line inside:
exec /usr/local/bin/fluxbox
It IS where my fluxbox executable is located. It says this in the directions:
Now you need to edit (or create) a file in your home directory called .xinitrc. Now you just added the following line:
exec /usr/local/bin/fluxbox
Notice the period AFTER .xinitrc ? I don't know whether to type it in because at the next line of directions it says:
Now you need to run the following commands:
$ chmod 700 .xinitrc
$ mkdir .fluxbox
It does not have a period after .xinitrc , so I didn't type it in. I don't know why Fluxbox isnt running, I installed it correctly and did all the rest of the directions correctly.

try to enter only
exec fluxbox
and the chmod command to define the rights of the file
just go to ur homefolder, where .xinitrc is located and type chmod 700 .xinitrc
the number 700 is a specific combination of rights.
tell me what u have in ur .xsession file which is also in ur home folder
if u dont have it then make it and ad the same line u have put in the .xinitrc-file
if u still cant choose fluxbox from ur login-menu
just press CTRL+ALT+F1 and type: startx -fluxbox

Red Hat doesn't use the .xinitrc file. I have redhat 8 and fluxbox. This is how I've set it up to show on Session menu in my login screen:
create a file with
#!/bin/sh
exec fluxbox
and save it in /etc/X11/gdm/Sessions/
with the name fluxbox. If you have the default installation of RH8 with gnome installed this should work.

I've did what you have done and it still didnt work. Can you give me some notes on exactly how you did it? Its becoming a pain trying to run Fluxbox.

IIRC you will also need to change one of the config files in /etc/X11/xdm too - I think it is called XSessions, and then you add in a line in the same format as the other managers on show. Then you should be able to add this from the settings menu in gdm.
I think you can also edit this from Gnome Control Center, IIRC.
The .xinitrc file that you have created will only be run if you start XWindows with the startx command. For this you will need to log into the console. If you want to give this a go (to see if Flux works) do the following:
1. Drop to a console (if you can do this from your login manager, then do so, otherwise Ctrl-Alt-F1)
2. Login as root, and type init 3 - this should kill XWindows. Do a Ctrl-Alt-F7 to check. Logout.
3. Login as normal user.
4. Type startx - this will start XWindows and use the config in your .xinitrc file.

simple instructions to get fluxbox running with RH8 below.

One thing to remember Oversight is once you have the Fluxbox file (the one with exec fluxbox) in your /etc/X11/gdm/Sessions/ directory, you still need to select Fluxbox from your Sessions menu when you log in. I'm running RedHat7.2 and gdm and until I switched to Fluxbox by using the Session menu, RH kept booting into Gnome.

the simplest way to use fluxbox is to login in failsafe mode, just type
$ fluxbox &
that's it.
