I'm gonna rebuild my laptop and trying to figure out which is better...

Which one do you like and why?

They both are good. I use KDE since my school's lab used KDE. I use KDE not for technical reasons, but just the above fact that my school's lab used KDE. I guess it really doesnt matter.
Just my 2 cents.

Up to you...you have to use both of them and then make your mind. I've used KDE but didn't care for it for my own reasons, reasons that others praise it for :)

Gnome, to me, just seems to be friendlier to me :)

i think gnome is better.
but im not using any of these two here. if you want to get rid
of the windows feeling get blackbox, fluxbox or windowmaker.
great ones aswell!

I use KDE and WindowMaker. KDE because Mandy 9.0 basic GNOME setup was boring and KDE's was nice and WindowMaker when I want to do something fast. My family also prefer KDE as it looks and feels like windoze.

Try both - after you figure out which one you like more... remove the other one (I do this, execpt for entire distros :D). Or... you could try another desktop manager - there are tons out there, each tailored for their own type of person. Check out the forum on the desktop managers to get a good idea, and then search the web.

Happy Hunting!

Well, depends on the version. Gnome 1.4 vs. KDE 2.2.2, I would go with Gnome. But if you're talking current versions, I MUCH prefer KDE 3 to any version of Gnome. The reason is simply that so far, of what I've used both, KDE3 really builds on KDE2,fixing what was broken, and improving it, whereas Gnome2 basically attempts to start over, and all the nice personalization stuff from Gnome 1.4 they got rid of (ecspecially with the panel). It does, however, have a really nice look. Of course, as asked, this is just my opinion.

I agree KDE3 is a big improvement on KDE2.2 and GNOME2 is differant from GNOME1.4. There did not appear to be much change from GNOME 1.4 to GNOME2. how much is there?

As far as resource managment (i.e. using less system resources) goes, what window manager is best?

Using just a window manager like any of the *boxes (Blackbox, Fluxbox, Openbox) would use minimal system resources. You'll lose the Windows-like feel of KDE and GNOME, but it's extremely fast, and some people prefer it that way.

TWM

I don't think you want to go that minimalistic, though :p

Command line ;)

And to answer the question at hand, I prefer Gnome because it seems to like my computer better. Even with the eye candy turned down in KDE, it still ran a little sluggish. Gnome is much more trim and fit :)

Also, Gnome is more easily configured to my liking. KDE is a little too bloated from the start, what with the taskbar filled to the brim with icons and other assorted junk. I like one panel at the bottom, and a hidden panel on the side for my menu, and that's it.

I do like the transparent menu of KDE, though. I wish Gnome would do that, actually...

I read in Linux for Dummies that Linux can only use 128 MB of swap space on any given partition, and that having swap partitions that are bigger than 128 MB is a waste of space. It said that you can have more than one partition, however. I know the latter is true, but is the size limitation part true or not? Thank you.

Whoops! I could've sworn I hit the button to start a new topic..

I just like KDE3, but then again that's my personal opinion ;) . This is a question that only you can actually answer. You could do a lot of research on the relative system loading of each DE, the apps supported under each DE, the options available for each DE (i.e., themes, etc.), and the beauty of each. But in the end, the decision will most likely be subjective and therefore something that only you can answer.

BTW, I love KDE3 (as I noted above ;) ), but I actually run IceWM most of the time because it acts better on my limited laptop hardware (P120/72MB/2.1GB). But my decision was actually made based on subjective factors.

Try here (http://www.xwinman.org/index.html) for a good resource on wm/GUI/DE products available. There are others, too, such as sourceforge.

From what I've heard, not true. I've actually been recommended to have a swap partition that is double the size of my RAM, so right now I've got a 512 MB swap.

well i tried almost all of them
first kde - didnt like it so much.
then gnome - was quite cool, until i wanted something different
then i tried window-maker - its a cool thing but it wasnt just my cup of tea.
the next was icewm - this one was great.. i loved it quite a lot but only for a few days.
then i downloaded englightenment - i never liked it. it just didnt have anything to like on it...

so finally i downloaded fluxbox..
well and here i am now
its simply what i want.

what i wanna say is, that u have to make ur own opinion..
someone likes it this way. someone else another way....

E17 looks quite awsome :) I never got around to compiling it all but once they release a version of it it should be quite nice :)

Don't want to distract from the original topic (I can't believe I was stupid enough to hit the wrong button!) but I was wondering if a swap partition that's 4 times the ammount of physical RAM is overkill..

Beckman

yea, right sharth

i tried only the 16.5version

and the e17 screens seem to look quite better
but anyway.
my fluxbox rules! :-)

and something to the ram-topic:

i have 384mbram and just took 1gbswap..

its never in use!
so u dont have to take a larger swap-partition than the double size of ur ram

wondering if i missed the sarcasm.....
