I've decided to take a break from Fluxbox for a bit and try out IceWM. So far, it's pretty good, except for one thing: I have to jump through hoops to get it running.

Here's what happens: When I tell GDM to use IceWM, I get an error message saying my session lasted for less than ten seconds. When I check the error log, it's totally blank.

HOWEVER, if I boot into an xterm and type 'icewm', it boots fine, albeit slowly. Everything runs fine after that.

How can I fix this? If you need to see any config files, logs, etc. let me know.

Hi Metalhead01,

Here are a few things I found useful while trying to configure IceWM under RH 8.0..

Ive been using IcWM with Mandrake 9.0 for a few months and really like it better than KDE or Gnome. 9.0 comes with IceWM and Icepref to configure it. I put RedHat 8.0 on one of my machines and have had a dickens of a time getting IceWM to work as well as it does under Mandrake. The biggest problem is I can't configure it because I can't get Icepref or IceWM Control Panel working. IceWM is pretty much useless if you can't configure it.

I'm a relative newbie, (six months or so) and have not been able to find out how to get IceWM Control Panel tarball to install on RH 8.0, although it's installation with Mandrake 9.0 ran like a peice of cake.

When I try to install it on RH 8.0 I get...

Traceback (most recent call last):
File "./PyInstallShield", line 23, in ?
import gtk,os,sys,GtkExtra
ImportError: No module named GtkExtra

My thought was to install gtkextra which I did and compiled without problem, but I'm still getting this same error.
If anyone can help me figure this out I would greatly appreciate it.
IceWM Control Panel is a really NICE peice of software, and makes configuring IceWM a breeze, at least under Mandrake 9.0. :)

Thanks
