Just a simple little question...

How do I get Waimea to show up in the dropdown box in the standard graphical login screen?

I hope someone can help me out...

Thanks...

First, the graphical login is called a display manager. The "big 3" are xdm, gdm, and kdm. I'm not sure which one mandrake uses by default, but it will likely say somewhere on the log-in screen. There will be a config file associated with whatever display manager you are using.

Try just searching www.google.com/linux for something like "gdm" or "xdm" or "kdm" once you figure out which one it is. It will likely be nothing more than simply adding a line to a text config file somewhere.

Good luck, and post back if you don't get anywhere with this info.

doesn't say in the login screen...

i think it should be the kdm considering that Mandrake's default setup has KDE as the default window manager...

but what should i add to the configuration file and where might it be...

Well,

I did a quick search on google.com/linux for configuring kdm and found that there may be a GUI utility called "kcontrol".

Try running "kcontrol" from a commandline (terminal) as root and going into applications-> login and look under the sessions part.

If not, we will just have to find out what the actually file is that contains the info.

Ok, without being at your computer this is a little difficult. Let's not quit on the kcontrol just yet.

When you added the new entry, it probably asked you for what you wanted to call the new entry, and the executable that was to be run when you select this session. Are you sure you used the correct executable when you entered this info? Have you run waimea before, and if so, what command did you use to start it?

If you did do that correctly, that how did it "not work"? Did you get any error messages, and if so, what were they?

it did not ask what executable i wanted to run...

when i tried logging in under waimea it went to ?twm?
just a consle (xterm) with a simple little menu when you left click the desktop...

i'm digging around too, and i can't find too much on the subject...

i got it to work

the session name in kdmrc and Xsession have to be exactly the same...

it took a little digging on the web, but i found it...

thanks for your help

now i got to figure out how to configure waimea...

Ok, some things to try... if you don't know how to edit config files as root, make sure you post back with that info first, and I will explain that first... if not:

1. Load kcontrol again and remove the waimea session, save and exit (or just exit if no option to save).

2. See if you have a file called:

/etc/X11/kdm/Xsession

3. Add the following lines:

waimea)
exec /etc/X11/xinit/waimeainitrc;;

4. If the file "/etc/X11/xinit/waimeainitrc" does not exist, create one and just enter the text:

waimea

I am getting this info from the following url:

GREAT!

Ignore my previous post then... post back if you find some cool themes to download... I use windowmaker, but waimea looks pretty cool too!
