hey all - just curious as to recommendations for a good WM besides kde/gnome. i just wanted a different style to get away from the whole windows-look, and enlightenment has been on my wish-list for awhile now. but ive just recently looked into fluxbox, and they seem like similar principles.
so what do you guys think? i want something with (relative) ease of use, but not the same style as like windows. just want something graphical and easy to make linux more unique.

Try IceWm. Simple and fast. No learning curve at all.

WindowMaker or XFCE. They are both small and light on system resources.

I'ld have to ask you how you want to use your system?
If you are big into using the keyboard and like shortcuts, I'ld suggest sawfish. That's what I use, mostly because I can move and resize witndows from the keyboard.
There's also larswm and ion that are heavy into the keyboard. Heavier than sawfish even. :)
Ion is one that doesn't use the mouse much.
So basically it comes down to how you want to use it.
Waimea didn't appeal to me, as the docs on keyboard shortcuts are kinda fuzzy, but I do like it's use of translucence though. :)
My 2 cents.

hey knute - as for how id like to use it: since im still not very experienced in linux, basically a n00b, i dont want anything overly difficult to use or that requires too much customization (esp the non-graphical kind!), but i also like a system that allows me to change it to my liking. For me, KDE and Gnome seem too much like Windows itself, and i figure, if im making the jump to linux, why should i allow it to feel and run as close to windows as possible? so thats why enlightenment and the like appeal to me.
As for keyboard shortcuts, yes, i do like to use them (I use them like CRAZY in windows), but as I'm not familiar with them in linux/sawfish it isnt the most important feature to me.

LOL Sprocket!
Some wm's have defaults, but they are all customizable to what YOU want to use.
All it takes in most cases is editing a config file, but some have graphical interfaces as well.
Fluxbox has keyboard shortcuts as well as Sawfish, and enlightenment. Those are all that I know for sure.
For the way that I use keyboard shortcuts though, Sawfish has the most in the range of moving, resizing, opening, and closing programs.
The ones that are lacking in most of the otherones that I've tried are the moving and resizing with the keyboard. I love the pack option in Sawfish. It sends the window all the way across the screen till it bumps into another window or the edge of the screen. :) Schweeeet!
