I'm in a fog.

I've looked for Java runtime and it seems that the Linux port for PPC is a generation old.

Any help in getting any version of jre running on YDL 2.3 appreciated. Is there a how-to somewhere?

Go to penguinppc.org and download their java runtime. It works well. It comes in a script, which you must give execute permission to (chmod +x downloadedfile.sh). You then run it, and it will make you "more" a long license. Hold enter all the way until it starts guiding you through the install process. (No compilation needed, its a binary package)
