Yippie! I just forced the old gForce2 to 85Hz and thought I'd share.

I've always known it should be able to do better than

(**) NV(0): Default mode "1152x864": 108.0 MHz, 67.5 kHz, 75.0 Hz

and just settled for it for quite a while. After getting fed up with that I started looking for a way to make it do better.

Custom mode lines, maybe but I couldn't get XF86Cfg to run. It would segfault on me, maybe it's just something you gotta compile for the system. Saved this as a working harder at it idea for later...

I subscribed to the X-newbie mailing list just to see what I saw for traffic, and maybe get an idea. Doh! It's so simple it's disgusting. Lie to the XF86Config-4 by raising the lower end of the ranges!

The system is 'supposed' to select the 'best' video mode, well it don't and I just proved it. Instead of using the real vertical refreah range of 30-180 I jacked it up to 80-180 and Bingo! 85Hz refresh rate and a few more pixels to boot :D

(**) NVIDIA(0): Default mode "1280x960": 148.5 MHz, 85.9 kHz, 85.0 Hz

Which is better than "1152x864" from above and it's still at

(--) Depth 24 pixmap format is 32 bpp

I feel like a moron for letting it get away with less for so long.
