I've searched through these forums and have found some things related to getting the sound to work, but I still can't get anything out of my computer.

I'm using Gnome at the present, and can't get sound out of anything.

How much of the system did you install? If you only did a basic install, you may not have the drivers you need for sound, is why I asked.

How are you trying to produce sound?... Music CD? MP3 files? System beep?

I told the installer to install everything. I'm fed up with it right now. It seems like it's working for everyone but me.

There's a master sound control app in Linux... Something like sound config, or something like that. The default setting in this app can run the gammit, from all settings set to zero, to the volume set sky high. Poke around in either KDE, or Gnome to see if you can find the app, and play around with the settings.

I'm having a similar problem, so don't feel alone, although I'm running an oldworld G3. I keep getting this error when logging into KDE:

"Error while initializing the sound driver:
device dev/dsp cant be opened (no such device)
The sound server will continue using the null output device"

I went ahead and used MAKEDEV audio to install all the audio devices that I might need, but I still get that error message. From what I gather in the man page for MAKEDEV, when the error says something about "device can't be opened, no such device" as opposed to "no such file or directory", it means that the kernel doesn't have the right drivers. I'm not sure what to do about that though, I'm just using the kernel that came with BootX, so I'm not sure what I need to do.

Also, I should note that before installing all the window manager stuff, back when all I had for a system was "basedebs.tar", I would get a beep. Now I can't get any sounds at all.
