I set my hdparm in a script that runs at startup. I noticed that DMA wasn't staying turned on for me.
What I did to "fix" it was to add 2 more hdparm commands to my script that ONLY tunred on DMA for each of my hard drives. Now the DMA stays on for me.
I don't know why but it worked (for me).
