This is crazy, and really weird too. I have an IBM Desktar (40Gb) as a second hard drive. The warranty is just expired a few weeks ago. Today, I mounted it, copy some files into it, and no problem. And then I rebooted my computer, and it was the last time that it works. The hard drive is no longer detected by the BIOS, even though I can hear sounds from it. I have put it into different motherboards, and tried to use different IDE cables too. What hsould I do now?? :(

Did you plug power cable to your hard drive?

Off course I did! I can even hear the sound of the motor. And it is vibrating too. But my stupid MB (and all other MB, actually) says that it is not there. Btw, if any of you have a Desktar, I would like to know what "force device 1 present" means.

If you suspect hard drive problems, disk utilities from the manufacturer are a good place to start:

If the utility disk cannot find the drive, you definately want to check things like jumpers, power and data cables and such.
Good Luck

"force device 1 present"......device 1 indicates a slave drive. Is this drive configured as such? Had you moved it before the error message?

I've used this page in the past when I thought I had problems with my Deskstar..........

This give several alternatives.
Used the call center, as the drive was still under warranty, and they were more than helpful.
