I am currently running MandraKe 9 on my laptop.... After a ton of problems I have recently managed to get my sound working... to a point... there is still a problem when gaim attempts to play a sound that causes a loop. But that is not my current problem... my current problem has to do with when I try and play video using Xine... I have tried playing DVDs as well as avi files and every single time I get a stuttering with the audio. With the avi files I have tried from a cd as well as from the hard drive with the same result. The specs for my sound card are:
Bus 0, device 8, function 0:
ESS Technology ES1988 Allegro-1 (rev 18).
IRQ 5
Master Capable. Latency=64. Min Gnt=2.Max Lat=24.
I/O at 0x1400 [0x14ff]

I tried using multiple drivers with Xine and the only one I could get to work was the oss driver. I can play mp3 and wav files with xmms with no distortion. Can anyone offer any ideas as to why this problem may be occuring? I have checked the forum, google, the mandrake forums to no avail and I am at the end of my limited experience with linux.

Difficult question you have. I would say that try to use MPlayer it's good and check is there same problem with the sound.

thank you thank you thank you.... it's working with no skips.... now I just have to mess around with mplayer to get used to it.... would you have any idea about why xine would have a stutter b/c I used the same audio driver for both... the oss driver... I'm trying to learn all I can about linux so any light you could shed on why one worked and the other didn't would be appreciated

I don't know what is wrong in Xine. One fix could be that you try to install xine using tar packages and don't select any special sound drivers and check will it work without enabling oss.
