I'm running Redhat 7.2, and my internet connection is acting rather strange. It will not load most of the sites I try to connect to. This site will load, and a few others will too, but almost every site I try is unable to load. They just time out. It seems that sites with graphics are some of the main culprits.
I know it is not a browser-specific problem because when I try to ping these sites (such as espn.com, hotmail, etc), I get no response at all. I'm not on a network (I use a cable modem) and my firewall is functioning normally.
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Do put too much faith in the ping. Some, if not most, sites block ping traffic at the firewall level and just drop it.

I was able to telnet into port 80 of the ESPN server, so that means that it is functioning, at least. I'm thinking that it is an ISP problem, possibly someone in our neighborhood is hogging the bandwidth today.

The peculiar problem is that it affects some programs. Gaim won't connect to the server, but freeciv works fine.

I have had a simlar problem to yours
Do you have a static or dynamic IP adress?
if your ISP uses a DHCP server you could try obtaining a new IP
in linux or windows
in Linux try eth0 up then eth0 down, this must be done as root from a console
the first command should relase the IP adreess & the 2nd should help you obtain a new IP adress
or if you want to repeat the process in windows
type ipconfig/release
then @ the next prompt type ipconfig/renew
This two commands should try to release & then renew your IP adress. Again this only works if you obtain a dynanmic IP adress.

10-4 on the stupid charter they changed the modems in my state and ever scince I have been having a problem with them and all they will say is they don't suport linux. some days it is ok and other days I have to reset my modem 4 - 5 times. but with M$ looking to be more compatable with linux in the next couple of years maybe these problems will go away.:D

It is a static IP. It has never been changed.

That Sucks! who is your ISP? is it AT&T? thats who mine is & I never call them becuse they never know how to fix anything, even in windows. In fact the first time I called becuse my connection was down I talked to a level 2 tech who told me my IP adress had been stolen.Keep in mind I was connecting with a dynamic adress. He then told me they would get back to me in 2 weeks when they figured out what the problem was, needless to say I was pissed. After hanging up with support I went ahead & did an ipconfig/release then renew. to my great joy I had net access again:D

Strange. It now works fine after renewing the lease about 3 times in windows and restarting my PC into linux.
I just can't stand a spastic internet connection . Hopefully, the problem is fixed.
