I recently installed Samba 2.2.7 on a linuxbox running RH7.3 which is linked to a winbox running Windows ME. Both boxes can ping each other by IP and name, and the winbox can see the linuxbox - but can't access it. Both boxes are running identical user names and passwords, and a samba user has been set up with the same name and pw. Whe I checked the samba log I found some entries which suggest to me that the server may be firing up and then dying. Could someone in the know please comment. An extract is given below:

Fixed it! Samba was still running so the messages in the log file must be OK.

My problem turned out to be the Red Hat 7.3 firewall - it was blocking all traffic on eth0. Once that log jam was removed everything works fine and I am really impressed with Samba.

Thanks to all who helped me during the past few days to get my win- and lin- boxes sharing data. Another step down the route of switching totally to Linux.
