ALL I NEED IS SOME ADVICE FOR MY NETWORK...

NETWORK:

900 MHZ DELL W/ REDHAT 8.0 (SAMBA SERVER) "THIS IS MY MAIN COMPUTER I USE"

90MHZ WORKSTATION

I WANT A NOVELL SERVER AND A WINDOWS NT PROXY SERVER...

THE MACHINES I HAVE FOR THAT ARE:

133MHZ AND A 200MHZ CPU

>WOULD A 133MHRZ RUN NOVELL OKAY?

>WHICH ONE SHOULD I USE FOR NT PROXY?

>I'VE NEVER RAN NOVELL, UNIX, AND WINDOWS ON THE SAME

>NETWORK, SO I THINK I WILL RUN INTO SOME PROBLEMS.

>IF MY NETWORK USERS LOGIN WITH NOVELL, CAN THEY STILL ACCESS MY SAMBA SERVER?

THANK YOU MATT NULL

Hi Matt,

Please don't SHOUT, it isn't nice!

OK, to try and cover your questions:
A 133Mhz will run Novell quite happily - depending on the version. I assume you already have the server installation and license disks? I've seen Novell servers running P100 on 128Mb RAM with over 2000 days up-time (not an exaggeration), but that was in the days of Novell 3.11 and 3.12. the recent incarnations of Novell are trying to catch up with the advances (and avarices) of the web so they are more RAM and processor hogs.

You'll need the following minimums (this is for Novell 5 - higher releases need more):
Server class PC with a P100 or better
32Mb RAM (64 if you're running Java)
700Mb disk space

Don't forget to add another 10Mb disk space and 1Mb RAM for each client that will connect!

Windows proxy is outdated, outgunned and outmoded - I wouldn't touch it with a 10 foot barge pole, but that's my personal opinion which you didn't ask for! You'll need at least a 486/33 with 32 megs of RAM and 128 megs of disk space (minimum) on a box running Windows NT Server 4.0 SP4 or better.

For more information on these subjects, may I recommend the respective product forums?

If your network users login with Novell from Windows, then Samba is not a problem. If they're booting from Novell 3 boot floppies, then you may have a few slight (smile) problems!

Your biggest problem is going to be managing the user database (assuming that everything else is compatible). NDS works well with Windows so there's no reason why your Samba server can't connect into the same user/password setup.

Hope that helps, and excuse the dry humour! *grin*

That was very helpful...Thank You!

What would you recommend for a proxy server?(Meaning what OS and cpu)

Last time I ran a proxy was several years ago. I used OSITIS WinProxy on a win98 box. I chose it because it allowed me a strict control over what the kids could and couldn't get to on internet.

Since I'm on my own now, I don't use one any more.

we've gotten Netware 5.1 running on a p233 with 128 megs RAM and a few gigs of HDD space. running the java console was dreadfully slow, and it was a pain dealing with it. if you're going to run Netware on either of those boxes, I'd take the 200 and have as much RAM as possible.

as far as the proxy, have you looked into a linux alternative to a WinNT proxy? I have a feeling it'll probably run better with less resources than an NT setup.
