Click to See Complete Forum and Search --> : Unexpected ppp dropping DSL connection when debug flag is off

Hello there!

My problem is the following. I have a SuSE 7.3 distro, and I use ppp and pppoe to interface with my ethernet DSL modem. The connection is initiated by typing in "cinternet -start" at command prompt once smpppd is running.

Since ppp seems to log every single packet coming in and out, I want to comment out the "debug" option in /etc/ppp/options. However if I do so I experience the following behaviour:

- when issuing "cinternet -start": after a few seconds the connection is working as normal (I can ping anything), but the command "cinternet" (which gives textual connection status) will still report "CONNECTING" instead of "CONNECTED". It won't change.

- eventually, after a few hours, the connection will drop. "cinternet" will still say "CONNECTING" but nothing may be ping'ed, either from the Linux box or from the LAN behind it. This happens even if I actively use the connection, thus not being idle, And long before the max. 24 hour connection time after which you are forcefully disconnected (for some reason that's what they do in France).

- to connect back I must do a "cinternet -stop" before another "-start", otherwise it won't do anything.

- and then, after a few hours... same story again & again.

Now, if I uncomment the "debug" line in /etc/ppp/options, everything is fine!

Has anyone experienced this? Is there another way to prevent ppp from logging its (heavy) traffic?
I found nothing on SuSE's website and my free support key has expired...

I'd be most grateful if you could help me in this matter.
Of course, if you need any other info or the contents of /etc/ppp/options just ask!

Thanks,
Thomas
