Non-Slackware users need not read further! Thank you!
Ok,
I downloaded the Linux quake binaries from idsoftware's site. I followed the instructions on the Quake HOWTO to install Quake 2. It was very easy to do it this way. Now Quake 2 only runs in software mode, even if I pick gl or glx with +set vidref gl...
So, I went ahead and downloaded the NVIDIA_GLX and NVIDIA_kernel tar files. I followed the easy instructions on how to install the nVidia drivers. Well, it didn't work! I got a message saying that insmod failed trying to load the nvidia.so or something like that. Why is it that these drivers do not require us to use './configure' and 'make' before doing 'make install'? I thought that was weird.
So, if you're using Slackware 8 and you've successfully got the nVidia drivers to work, I would like to hear from you.
PLEASE!!! :) Thank you!

Floating point exception -- nothing is overclocked, is it? You might want to back it off a bit if it is.
Does setting the vid_ref manually help, so that you don't use ref_softx.so? Something like quake2 +set vid_ref ref_sdlgl.so or quake2 +set vid_ref ref_glx.so?
It is possible that there's a bug in the softx renderer... maybe.

Here's the line from the error msg that refers to XFree86-DGA:
Xlib: extension "XFree86-DGA" missing on display ":0.0".
Failed to detect XF86DGA Mouse
Help!!! :(
I think one I fix whatever DGA shtuff it wants, Quake 2 will run!!!
I was using the default XF86Config that Slackware created for me during installation. So I decided to run xf86config and created my own, but it's still giving me that DGA choke hold. I even ran XF86Setup or something like that, but got the DGA choke hold again.
I'm going back to Google Linux, but I've already looked there.
Thanks,
Hector

LOL
I ran the uninstall script that came with icculus.org's .run file to remove Quake 2. Then I went to id's site and downloaded their .tar.gz file, copied some stuff off the Windows CD and Quake 2 started. It's only working in Software mode, and I can't even use the mouse. There's a huge delay from the time I press a mouse button to the time it actually does something in the game. Also, whenever I move the mouse, it goes all over the place. This is laughs!!!

Got Quake 2 up and running with flying colors!
For some odd reason the nVidia drivers did not want to install with the 2.2.19 or 2.4.5 kernels that come with Slackware 8.0. I kept running into all kinds of issues. So, I ended biting the bullet and downloaded Slackware 8.1 and installed it. Right after, I did the nVidia drivers install and it worked right-off the bat.
While running Quake 2 after the drivers install, I ran into a mouse problem. It ended up being that I was running Quake 2 at a lower resolution than X was running. Quake 2 was at 800x600 while X was at 1024x768. That might sound weird why it wouldn't work, but trust me that was the problem.
I also had a sound init problem when starting Quake 2. Since I'm using KDE3, I went into the Control Panel and disabled the sound server from starting and that fixed the problem beautifully. I don't like sound events in the GUI, anyways. :)
Next stop: Quake 3 Arena :D

Don't worry - If you got QII to work, chances are that every other game installation will go without a hitch. Good job and good luck!

Buahaha.........HA! Well for the nvidia drivers I found myself having to update Xfree86 from version 4.2.0 to 4.2.1 you just download some files and run a script. and get the tar files from nvidia.
