OK, when it crashes, are there any useful error messages printed?

You do have to start it up from a terminal emulator, though, to see them.

I had the same problem when I was using a sound card that used the sb sound module. Are you using an ess audio drive or sound blaster? try installing the alsa sound drivers for your card.
Buggy sound drivers will cause Q3 to freeze, but not Q2 or Q1. I don't know why
Good luck

Umm... so... have you tried starting it from a terminal emulator, and looking for error messages?

Just wondering Marine how did you get your Open GL working, I think I have the same VIdeo card as you, what driver did you use?

Since you are using the NVIDIA driver, you did opt to not install any of the other drivers that you were prompted to during the install? If you installed other drivers, this isn't going to work. You say there is no error...what exactly happens?

Very simple, i went to the Nvidiasite, went to download the right drivers, even used NV chooser,
Installed both the kernal and the glx driver.
I was going to restart my computer, it crashes. Then i had to reinstall Linux, MDK9 again.

P.S. It happend 3 times

Have you just tried to reinstall Quake 3 arena, sometimes that works.

To uninstall the rpm's for nvidia drivers
rpm -e NVIDIA_kernel.rpm
rpm -e NVIDIA_glx.rpm

When you rpm -e something, you need to use the package name, NOT the filename. NVIDIA_kernel.rpm is not the package name.

100prcnt Marine -- you don't need to do anything to remove the other drivers. They're independent.

Just to double check, you didn't install any of the other libs when installing quake right? It's been a while...I forget the exact options...but when you first run the install script, some of the libs are selected be default when you install. I could not get Q3 to run either until I unchecked those boxes because those files conflicted with what I was already running.

Have you tried the previous version of the Nvidia Drivers? I have heard, not experienced myself, that lotso of people are reverting to the previous version because of crashes/general problems with the newer drivers. Altho they have worked fine for me so far.

Ok, first test the Nvidia drivers. Just run glxgears and see if you get super high fps (like hundreds). If so, then the driver is installed and working.

second, try running quake3 +set developer 1 &>q3run.log and paste the output of q3run.log here.

3rd, have you tried the 1.32b version of quake3? it solved a problem I was having.

edit: here is a good page to read: http://zerowing.idsoftware.com/linux/q3a/

I have the EXACT same problem that the original poster has on TWO different machines.
Both are RedHat based, both running Nvidia drivers. (Latest available for both installations).

The key here that I think alot of people are missing is that you can successfully play the intro level. HOWEVER, when you try to start Q3DM1 or any other leve BESIDES the intro level, the machine hangs as soon as you spawn into the map. I have to kill X to get out of it.

What I did notice is that running the developer option and piping it to a file is that there are a TON of textures that it says it can't find. I wouldn't think that this would cause a hang rather than just some really funky looking effects.
Has anybody fixed this?

Q3A with point release 1.32b for linux.

Nvdia GeForce 420....

(Runs perfect under debian unstable....)

sorry i've been away so long on this thread (tdy to some hick town)
i got quake3 running stable. the problem is sound card first i ran quake without sound =success
then i stole my wifes soundblaster =success
i was using the ac97 sound drivers that came with my mobo

first try running quake3 without sound i cant remember the command. if that werks then go buy a popular brand soundcard or steal one from a family member running windows

I finally found the command to run it without sound and it ran fine. The whole reason I never thought it was sound though was that you could play the whole first intro level. Must be something to do with format of the sound files in later levels or something. Only thing I can think of anyway.
About the sound card, I am kinda screwed. This is a laptop so I am going to try to get ALSA working on this thing to see if it helps. I've heard that it does, its just a pain to get working.
