Right now Im using a 12gig WinXP/6 gig Mandrake Dell Inspiron 8000 laptop, but I'm looking at switching to SuSE for useability reasons.

My problem is that the SuSE installer doesnt recognize my existing partition table, but instead it wants to clean everything and start new. After digging around in the command line I believe I found the problem - my hda1 partition (Win XP) is somehow INSIDE the hda2 partition (Mandrake).

I'd rather not do a full reinstall due to the fact that I'd have to struggle through WinME and then the XP upgrade (don't ask), but I will if needed. Any help working around this little altercation, or any suggestions on how to figure out whether its Mandrake or Windows thats the culprit, would be much appreciated. a list of the partitions and the sectors or whatever they occupy is available on request if someone believes it would help.

Thanks in advance

use partition magic or arconis partition manager or parted (unix cli version) and resize the winxp partitions and mandrake partitions, and then install suse in the space that you make available.
