Hello people,

I am a newbie to linux.... I have just purchesed RedHat 8.0, and I want to install it on my web server. I am not sure on the proper configuration (sizes) for each partition. Here Is what I am working with..
I have three 36.9 scsi drives and a one channel raid controller. I was originally going to setup a raid 5 with win2k server. Now I have decided to use linux. What would be the best way to partition my drives and sizes e.g. /usr, /home.... I have no idea what I should do, and should I use a raid 5? Would that be in my best intrest for a web server?

Thankz in advance

Sorry for the delay in replying to your question. Guess everyone is on holiday.

Have a look through http://www.linuxplanet.com/linuxplanet/tutorials/ as there are a few on partitioning etc.

Thank you for your link, I have looked all around to try to find answers, but there are so many confilts with this person says this or that person says that. I am trying to obtain specific information related to my sytem. I just cant seem to find any. I am not sure what partitions I need and how large they should be. I have come to the conclusion that this may be how to setup my system..... Please comment on this if you can

Remember I have 70GB open with a raid 5. I would like to save as much room for /home seeing that all my clients will keep there files there. Am I missing anything? Or am I giving to much to some dir? Anyhelp would be great. Also what would be the point of having /home/local, would that be for my use?

"/" 1GB
"/tmp" 1 GB
<swap> 2GB (I have 1 gig of ram)
"/var" 1GB
"/usr" 7GB (RH8 will be 4680 w/everthing installed)
"/opt" 1GB
"/home" will have the rest of the free space

This will be a web server using CPanel, SSH, SSL, Http, FTP, php, etc.

Thanks in advance
