Help on Shared SSL and some SSL Questions

I just heard this information about having a shared SSL certificate running in one domain that allows the use of this certificate in multiple domains (that's how I understood it). Is there anyone out there who knows how this is done, and if you do, can you give out more information ?

Also, I don't know if this is possible or not but I want to install an SSL certificate on a subdomain i.e. sub.domain.com, is this possible ? When I tried it, the reference goes back to domain.com and not sub.domain.com. Can any one out there provide me information regarding this matter ?
