Never used Linux or even seen it! I've already partitioned my hard drive with Win XP Home. I have a formatted partition, empty, to install Linux 8 onto. I inserted my CD's to start my install and choose graphical option, then get message "Monitor: unable to probe", then the screen goes blank. After shutting down and re-booting, I tried the Text Option and it works, but don't understand what to do when getting to the Partition Section. I've already partitioned with Windows and want to install to the partitioned space, but cannot figure out how to. I bought the "Red Hat Bible" book and read it, but don't understand some of it. My AOL Instant Messenger username is "pabste2" if anyone is interested in helping a newbie.

You'll need at least two partitions to install Linux... root and swap. Root, usually written as just / , should be EXT3. Swap will be swap, or might be called linux swap.

If you created only one partition, the easiest thing to do is run the installer and change it there. When you get to the partitioning section, highlight the partition you made for Linux, and delete it. Be sure it's not your Windows partition. Then, tell it to auto allocate the free space.
