I'm trying to run the RedHat 8.0 install off of the retail "box set" of cds and it's giving me the following:

Kernel panic: VFS: Unable to mount root fs on 09:02

I have reason to believe it's a hardware problem, but after being directed to the "devices.txt" doc file, I have NO clue how to decode "09:02" into anything meaningful.

ANY help would be GREATLY appreciated. Thanks in advance!

Go into your system bios and disable power management.

That will hopefully work...

Tried that last night. Unfortuantely, power management was already off.

Be nice if you specified the system, cause there is a very similar problem with Compaq 900 Series Laptops already being discussed with a similar issue.

Anyways, to briefly describe the problem, modify your bootloader, and when loading the kernel, add the following string to the end of the line
"nomce nousb". This will boot you, then upgrade kernel to 2.4.20.
