sorry, didn't know how forums worked, and I accidentally posted this to hardware..I think it belongs here....

loopback filesystem in mandrake 9.0?

Hi,

I am going home for a few weeks over christmas, and will need to install linux on my father's PC. He doesn't like the idea of my repartitioning his hard drive, even though I've done this before without difficulties with both RH 7.0 and Mandrake 8.2.

So...

1) I have downloaded RH 7.1 and know how to install it within a Windows folder and boot into it with a boot disk. RH 7.2 and up supposedly don't let you install this way, but you can upgrade such an installation to later versions. I am familiar with RH.

2) I could use a CD-based distro like knoppix. I don't need to store work locally if I can ssh into my school's network (would be really cool if X is sucessfully exported to my father's PC!...don't know if it would work through his ISP)

3) I have seen that Mandrake 9.0 claims not to support Lnx4Win in its normal version, just the prosuite. Later, I looked at an installation guide that said it does work in the normal version. Which is it? If I can get Mandrake 9.0 to work, I don't see much point in going through 7.1 and then upgrading to 8.0...not that I even need 8.0, but it would be cool to have the latest stuff.

4) My father is using a cable modem, which I have never configured for linux. If I install linux within Windows, I suppose I will still have to find drivers of some sort, unless linux autodetects it. I have successfully installed Lucent drivers in the past. How about WinLinux2003? It claims to be just like Windows in recognizing and correctly configuring hardware. It also claims to be 100% compatible with RH 7.3, so I could always find rpms for things its missing.

Anyway, I'll probably burn all of these iso's, just to be prepared when I go back to his home, but I'd appreciate your input.

Thanks.

I apologized for that. If I (could have)/(knew how to) remove the other posting, I would have. I found myself in a forum (accidentally), did not understand that there was more than one forum (other than the one on the opening page), and after I realized this, did not think anyone would respond in the forum in which I first posted. I was hoping that someone would remove the other post, hence my alerting people to it.
