I've been trying to install RH Linux 8.0 for 3 weeks now.
Every time during the partition check I receive the same message:
hda: spurious 8259A interrupt: IRQ7
I have IBM Deskstar 40GB HDD with 3 parts. on it.
Using Part. Magic I have made room for the new OS.
I placed the swap part. (1GB) after the first part on the HDD and after the swap is the Linux part (5GB).
I thought RD 7.3 will work better, but w/7.3 my system freezes during the part. check w/out sending message.
What's wrong here, is it my HDD compatibility or something else?
Thanks for your effort.

No, just IBM h/d. go here
http://www.storage.ibm.com/hdd/support/download.htm
get the hard drive fitness test. it will not mess up any data currently on disk! but it will tell you if something is wrong with sectors, partitions, etc. and you decide if you want program to fix the problems.

Don't know if they will help, but have a look through the previous LNO threads on spurious interrupt (http://linuxnewbie.org/forum/search.php?s=&action=showresults&searchid=233656&sortby=lastpost&sortorder=descending).

My personal opinion is to go with Mandrake-Linux...the install went fine on my IBM Deskstar 45G hard drive.
I have considered Red Hat several times, and I just downloaded & installed it in VMWare just to see if it had gotten any better.
I deleted it 15 min. later.
I still think Mandrake blows it way for the new user....and maybe even for Power Users.
The Mandrake Install is much smoother too.
BTW, toss the Partition Magic except for the rescue disks, and use the Mandrake partitioner...you will love it. ;)
