I want to try one more time to get windows 2000Pro and mandrake 9.0 both on my main machine, I have found tons of stuff on dual booting on the net but nothing really shows/tells me what I need to know.

I want to have 10G for linux, and 20G for windows (plus or minus)

first: should I bother trying to partition my HD or let setup do it automatically (linux),some things I have found say partition yourself and some say let Linux do it

second: I would Install windows first correct?

third: how do I want to partition my hd properly
. . .

[/boot][/mnt/windows][/][swap][/home]
. . .

would that be correct, or is something misplaced or missing? I am only asking because I had problems installing before and believe it to be because the boot loader was improperly installed or in the wrong place.

If this is wrong, please help me out, TIA

Also is it possible to dual boot with Windows 2000 under the NTFS file system?

Install Windows on the first partition of your Primary drive. Then install Linux on your Secondary drive. MDK has the tools to configure you partioning scheme for Linux duringinstall. Here's my take on dual booting with XP................................................ .................

The same can be done with 2K exactly the same way.

Here's some info on partioning..................................

Well maybe I should have been more clear, I don't have any OS installed yet, I tried to install mandrake and windows 2000 and got a kernel panic: no init found (or something close) error.

I was wanting to know if those were the correct steps to take to install windows and linux and correct the problem or if I should install a different way (perhaps linux first since it has the partitioning tool?

Windows first, if you install Windows last, you might have problems booting into Linux.

Here's what I do:

I use a Windows 98 Boot disc and fdisk the Hard Drive. Give Windows 20 GB (or less) on a fat32 FS (You can either change it to NTFS later or not). Then reboot, get into the Win98 boot disk and format C:

Install Windows 2000 on the drive you just partitioned and formatted.

Then when finished, install Linux, you should be able to create a 10GB Partition on the same drive for Linux during the installation process.

I am a newbie but I've done this enough times to let you know that it's not as hard as it sounds.

Here's the easiest way I believe:

fdisk one partition with your whole drive....don't bother partitioning.

Install Windows first...use FAT32 then change to NTFS later if you want to. If you change later, remember that you will need a FAT partition if you want to xfer files between Linux & Windows.

Now install Mandrake-Linux using the Expert mode.

Use Mandrake's partitioner to resize the partitione the way you want. My 45G drive is partitioned this way:

Windows

C:\ 6G FAT32 is my WinXP boot partition. (I may convert to NTFS.)
D:\ 19G NTFS is my WinXP data partition.
E:\ 5G FAT32 is my WinXP partition to Xfer files to/from Linux. Doubles as another data partition for my security camera.

Linux

\ 4.5G
\swap 512M
\home 7+G

Forgive the math, these are from memory.

My point is that the Mandrake partitioner can do it all...and is the best in my opinion.

You will be amazed at what it can do... ;)
