I want to make a thread where you can post your linux gaming performance boosting tips...here are some that i use:

-Run a more modest window manager, such as black/flux box.
-Install the latest drivers for your graphics card (nvidia drivers are a must!)
-Use NvAGP instead of the default one, i get a slight performance boost.

its NVidias AGP drivers, you have to set it as an option in your XF86Config File.

According to the NVidia driver install how-to:

Option "NvAGP" "integer"
Configure AGP support. Integer argument can be one of:
0 : disable agp
1 : use NVIDIA's internal AGP support, if possible
2 : use AGPGART, if possible
3 : use any agp support (try AGPGART, then NVIDIA's AGP)
Please note that NVIDIA's internal AGP support cannot
work if AGPGART is either statically compiled into your
kernel or is built as a module, but loaded into your
kernel (some distributions load AGPGART into the kernel
at boot up). Default: 3 (the default was 1 until after
1.0-1251).

i personnaly would use it.

game on!!

Use gentoo ! Really, I get WAY better performace playing q3 in gentoo then in Redhat, OpenGL works without errors, no more SIG 11, Doesnt crash when I change OpenGL settings, better frame rates...

Another good tip is to play games without running any WM in the background. Edit your .xinitrc (if you don't use KDM/GDM) to start only the game ;)
