I am trying linux for the first time, but I am having some problems. I have installed Redhat 8 and when I boot up to X Windows, it asks for a username/password. The problem is neither the mouse or keyboard work. They worked fine during the installation and in text mode but nothing in X Windows.

Please help.

Are those usb devices post your /etc/X11/XF86Config-4 file
you can do that like this to floppy (dos formated)

mount /dev/fd0 /mnt/floppy
cp /etc/X11/XF86Config-4 /mnt/floppy/XF86Config-4.txt
umount /dev/fd0

and then just attach file that file in here (from Windows but don't open that file in Windows)

where do i go to type that; on startup it goes to grub to choose an operating system, then to X windows. If i choose to go to command it good to a "grub" prompt and says that the kernel isn't loaded or it can't find that image

if you use a boot disk it gives some options but then it also goes to X windows

do I have to be in text mode to do this

No that was just command line command to copy your /etc/X11/XF86Config-4 file (X server config file) if you have internet connection only in Windows. Don't boot using that floppy it's only that file that i need to check.

entrer control-alt-F1 to take your system to cli mode. log in as root and run.

mouseconfig

reboot the system (or restart X).

this will allow you to set the mouse correctly. i suspect the keyboard is ok, but you can`t type because you have no focus on the login window.

good luck

Those mount+other commands after login as root. phlipant ment that you type that mouseconfig to command line like those my things.

should work anywhere, at any time. you don`t need a window to type it in. if not, you will have to ssh in from a remote box to run mouseconfig and edit your XF86Config file by hand.

i know i'm a moron but stick with me.

where do type root at?

i have red hat 8 configured to boot directly to x windows

the only place i can get a prompt is at the grub menu, if i press c there it gives a "boot" prompt

i tried to type boot there but it it said something about the harddrives

Follow these instructions and enter '3' for the runlevel.

1. Boot up to the grub menu screen.

2. Highlight the linux os that you would like to boot and press the letter e to edit the entry.

3. Highlight the second line on this next screen and press e to edit it.

4. Cursor over all the way to the end of the line and press the spacebar and enter the runlevel to boot into:

a. 1 = single user mode

b. 2 = Multiuser mode

c. 3 = Full Multiuser mode

d. 5 = X11

5. After you have entered the runlevel desired, press the enter key and then the letter b to boot the linux os.

Thanks mdwatts.

ok i have gotten into text mode and found xf86config file.

does any thing look off; the problem is the keyboard and mouse as soon as it boots into X Windows to login. There is just no response from either.

here it is:
